Walking Festivals in the US and Canada

Walk your socks off at these great walking festivals. Enjoy volkssport walking events designed for walkers, by walkers. Some have guided group walks and workshops. Others allow you to enjoy the walks at your own pace and meet other walkers.

Join the Georgia Walkers for six walks and social events in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Presidents Day Weekend.

Most multi-event walking festivals are non-competitive and open to everyone. Many also include social events such as meet-and-greet evenings and dinners for walkers who like to meet others who share their passion for walking.

Seabreeze Walking Festival, Ocean Shores, Washington State

This walking festival is held on Presidents Day Weekend in odd-numbered years. The festival is in Ocean Shores, Washington, Saturday through Monday of Presidents' Day Weekend, hosted by the Capitol Volkssport Club.

Texas Trail Roundup, San Antonio, Texas

The Texas Trail Roundup is an annual event that welcomes you to the heart of Texas on President's Day Weekend in February. San Antonio is known for being a festive city, and February is no exception. In this special time of year, the annual Stock Show and Rodeo brings thousands of cowboys and cowgirls to demonstrate their skills.

This Texas walking event features the famous San Antonio River Walk, the historic Alamo, the World Heritage Site Missions, the Japanese Tea Garden, Breckenridge Park, Trinity University, the historic neighborhoods of the Monte Vista and King William Districts, El Mercado and more.

Victoria Phoenix Festival, Victoria, BC, Canada

The volkssport clubs of South Vancouver Island invite walking enthusiasts to the Victoria Volkssport Phoenix Festival, held in gorgeous Victoria, British Columbia in April in odd-numbered years. The weekend features walks for everyone, from easy 5K walks through challenging half-marathon and marathon distances. They host the event just north of Victoria. California Volkssport Association Convention

This yearly walking festival is held on the first weekend of May in a different California location each year. They have a Meet and Greet reception on Friday, and lunch and dinner on Saturday. See the events at the California Volkssport Association website.

Canadian Volkssport Federation Annual General Meeting and Convention

The annual general meeting is held in a different place in Canada each year. Enjoy the hospitality and meet walkers from around the continent. Enjoy a Friday evening meet-and-mingle social event and a Saturday evening banquet. See the CVF website for details.

Rogue Valley Riches

This event is held in odd-numbered years in May in southern Oregon. It explores beautiful trails in the Lost Creek Lake area. Six walking routes include easy and challenging walks. The walking festival is headquartered at the Edgewater Inn in Shady Cove, Oregon. Look for details from the Rogue Valley Walkers.

This Oregon walking event features a Meet and Greet on Friday, a barbecue dinner on Saturday, and a no-host dinner on Sunday.

AVA Biennial Convention

The biennial AVA national convention is held in odd-numbered years in locations around the country. In 2019, it is in Albany, New York. Besides a week of walks, there are socials, a banquet, workshops, and lots of camaraderie. Look for details on the American Volkssport Organization website.

Whidbey Walking Festival, Coupeville, Washington

This yearly festival of walks on Whidbey Island explores the beauty of Puget Sound in early September. See details on the Northwest Trekkers website.

US FreedomWalk Festival

This yearly walking festival is held in mid-October. It sanctioned by the IML Walking Association as well as the AVA/IVV. Walkers enjoy the monuments and sights of Washington, DC as well as trails in Arlington, Virginia. They have 10 walking routes with distances from 3 miles (5 kilometers) to 27 miles (44 kilometers). All walks begin and end at the Rosslyn Holiday Inn at Key Bridge, 1900 N. Fort Myer Drive. The hotel is three blocks from the Rosslyn Metro Station. Each day features different trails and trail lengths.

Organizers of this Washington DC walk designed the trails to include scenic highlights such as Roosevelt Island, the C&O Canal, the Capitol Crescent trail, and Glover-Archbold Park

While primarily a walking event, participants will also have the opportunity for a bike on the Arlington Loop & swim event at the hotel pool. Walkers have a window of several hours to start their events. The schedule begins with a 5- or 10-kilometer Welcome Walk on Friday. On Saturday walkers have the choice of 6-, 12-, 21-, or 44-kilometer walks. On Sunday, there are 6-, 12-, 21-, and 32-kilometer walks. There is a social on Friday evening and an International Dinner at the Vantage Point Restaurant, Holiday Inn on Saturday night. See details at the U.S. FreedomWalk Festival website.

West Texas Trailwalkers Annual Event

This event is held Columbus Day weekend (mid-October) yearly. The West Texas Trail Walkers sponsor a three-day event yearly featuring spectacular scenery. They typically have a Friday night wine and cheese welcome party and a Saturday night buffet. See details on the West Texas Trailwalkers website.

Walk Around Florida

Walk Around Florida is held each year the last weekend in October or the first weekend of November. Look for details at the Happy Wanderers website.

Hershey Holiday Walkfest

Enjoy Thanksgiving weekend with this walkfest held in the sweetest town in the U.S., Hershey, Pennsylvania. Walks explore Candy Lane and the town of Hershey, all with wafts of chocolate aroma in the air. Look for details on the Susquehanna Rovers website.

Haunted Gettysburg Weekend

This event is held in odd-numbered years in November and is sponsored by the York White Rose Wanderers. There are typically four walks and a swim event.

One walk visits the haunted places around the southern part of town and on parts of the battlefield. Gettysburg is the most haunted town in the United States. The Days Inn Gettysburg is the host hotel, with discounted rooms available. There is a dinner on Saturday night at General Pickett’s Buffet.

Colonial Williamsburg Walks

This yearly December event includes a night walk and a day walk each day, plus a swim. It's a great way to celebrate the holiday season with caroling and torchlight. Look for this event among those hosted by the Peninsula Pathfinders of Virginia.

Atlantic Region Conference

The clubs of the Atlantic region host a regional walking festival and conference that includes three walks, one bike, and one swim. Dates and locations vary. See details on the Maryland Volkssport Association website.
