Thrive Patch Weight Loss Supplement: Benefits, Ingredients, Side Effects

Most nutrition shops and some drugstores sell dozens of weight loss supplements. All claim—with big, bold lettering— that they'll help you lose weight fast or gain muscle mass quickly. Many of the products depict people with enviable bodies. Aside from the packaging, how many of these products actually help people accomplish their weight loss or muscle building goals?

One such popular weight loss product is known as the Thrive Patch (part of the Thrive weight loss system), an inventive take on a weight loss supplement.

Rather than take a pill orally, you use a patch (similar to a nicotine patch for smoking cessation) that delivers its ingredients through your skin.

What Is the Thrive Brand?

Thrive is an eight-week “premium lifestyle system to help you experience peak physical and mental levels.” The brand was created by the organization Le-Vel out of Frisco, Texas.

The company's products are sold through multi-level marketing also known as a “pyramid scheme" where people who purchase this product can also sell it to others.

The company recommends using the Thrive Experience, a 1-2-3 system, that offers three types of products: the patch, premium lifestyle capsules (there are different capsules for men and women), and a micronized shake mix.

The Thrive Patch

The Thrive Patch is a different delivery weight loss system—it infuses the skin with the Thrive Lifestyle Formula for a 24-hour period, after which you switch to a new patch.

The Thrive Experience

The brand's Thrive Experience involves three main steps:

  1. Take a supplement capsule in the morning.
  2. Drink a shake during lunch.
  3. Switch to a new Thrive Patch every afternoon.

You don’t do anything at night, as the patch is supposed to be delivering its formula of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, caffeine, and probiotics directly into the skin all day long.

This lifestyle formula doesn’t come cheap—the products cost approximately $300 for an eight-week supply.

Le-Vel promotes Thrive’s ability to help you lose weight, lessen the appearance of aging, boost your immune system, improve your productivity, and support a healthy digestive system.


The Original Thrive Patch (there are other Thrive Patch types) contains the following ingredients, which were studied for their effectiveness.


Also known as tetrahydropiperine, a compound found in black pepper and long pepper.

Cosmoperine is a penetration enhancer and allows for the absorption of drugs directly through the skin. Sabinsa Cosmetics, the company that offers this proprietary product, says that cosmoperine should be non-irritating, GMO-free, and Halal and Kosher certified.

The bottom line: Cosmoperine has been used in popular products, including cosmetics. This might mean that the Thrive Patch formula does indeed make its way into the skin.

Green Coffee Bean Extract

This extract is one of the world’s most popular weight loss supplements. It's extracted from coffee beans (which are green before they get roasted, hence the name “green”), giving consumers a boost of caffeine to burn calories and lose weight.

The substance within green coffee bean extract, chlorogenic acid, supposedly affects weight loss. When coffee beans get roasted, however, most of the chlorogenic acid gets removed.

In a study from BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the authors state that green coffee beans are rich in chlorogenic acid, and coffee contains the greatest antioxidant capacity among the most consumed beverages in the world.

During this study, the authors investigated male laboratory mice who were fed a diet of caffeine and chlorogenic acid for 14 days. They found that green coffee bean extract reduced visceral fat content and body weight.

In another lab mice-based study, researchers investigated the efficacy of chlorogenic acid on altering body fat in a high-fat diet. Either caffeic acid or chlorogenic acid was supplemented with a high-fat diet.

Results showed that both chlorogenic and caffeic acid significantly lowered body weight, fat mass, and insulin levels compared to a control group. The acids also lowered triglycerides and cholesterol levels.

The bottom line: These clinical studies on weight loss were conducted on laboratory animals rather than humans, making the results most likely statistically insignificant.


The Sabinsa Corporation (a research group that manufactures herbal extracts, cosmetics, and other wellness ingredients) created a patented dietary supplement known as ForsLean.

ForsLean contains forskolin—a compound extracted from the herb Coleus forskohlii. C. forskohlii is known to be the only herb that produces forskolin.

C. forskohlii is a member of the mint family and grows in subtropical climates. Additionally, it contains a long history of use for medicinal purposes that date back to ancient times.

It was also used as a condiment in India. Considered an ancestor of tuber, the underground part of a potato stem, C. forskohlii is said to aid in pain management, work as an anti-inflammatory and manage coughs, ulcers, digestive issues, and abdominal pain.

In a study from the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition researchers investigated the effects of C. forskohlii on body composition. In a double-blind, randomized study, 23 females ingested 250 milligrams of ForsLean or a placebo two times per day for 12 weeks.

Researchers measured body weight and body composition at 0, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. They also obtained fasting blood samples and dietary records at 0 and 12 weeks.

No significant differences were recorded in blood lipids, muscle and liver enzymes, cell counts, heart rate, blood pressure, and they didn't note any side effects. Results showed that ForsLean didn’t promote weight loss, but did slow weight gain in overweight females with no significant side effects.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study published in Nutrients showed that taking C. forskohlii, along with following a low-calorie diet, can help manage metabolic risk factors such as high blood pressure, high glucose levels, low HDL cholesterol levels and high triglyceride levels.

In this study, 30 participants received either 250 milligrams of C. forskohlii or a placebo twice daily for 12 weeks. All followed a low-calorie diet. Researchers measured body mass index, waist and hip circumference, waist to hip ratio and dietary intake.

Results showed significant reductions in waist and hip circumference in both groups after 12 weeks. They also found that HDL levels significantly increased and insulin concentration improved in both groups.

Another randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12-week study found that C. forskohlli can serve as a possible agent for managing obesity.

In this study from Obesity Research, researchers measured body composition, testosterone levels, metabolic rate, and blood pressure in 30 overweight males (15 consumed C. forskholli and 15 consumed a placebo control).

They found that the C. forskholli group demonstrated a change in body mass and body composition and increased testosterone levels compared to the placebo group. 

The bottom line: Clinical studies support ForsLean’s role in reducing weight gain. The herb might work better on men than in women for overall beneficial body composition changes.

Garcinia cambogia

Garcinia cambogia is a tropical fruit that also goes by the name Malabar tamarind. The fruit is used as a popular weight loss supplement in products worldwide. The ingredient is marketed as a blocker to your body's ability to make fat and as an appetite suppressant.

In a systematic review from the Journal of Obesity, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials using G. cambogia extract as a weight loss supplement.

They found nine trials that provided enough data for statistical information. The trials only revealed a small difference in weight loss for G. cambogia over a placebo. They also found that those who took G. cambogia experienced gastrointestinal issues at twice the rate of the participants who took a placebo.

The bottom line: Studies show that G. cambogia extract only causes short-term weight loss, and future trials are needed before you can definitely state that G. cambogia can work as a weight loss supplement.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a nutrient that occurs naturally in the body and is found in foods. CoQ10 acts as an antioxidant to protect you from cell damage.

Bottom line: You don't necessarily need more CoQ10 than what your body already produces. Also, evidence is conflicting if taking more CoQ10 really helps with any medical conditions.

Thrive Patch Types

Thrive offers several other types of patches that have some other additional ingredients and designs.

Furthermore, these variant patches offer anything from mood support to a stronger version of the original Thrive Patch:

Other ingredients in these patches include the following:

  • 5-HTP: An amino acid that builds proteins within the body
  • L-theanine: A natural ingredient in tea
  • Guarana: A stimulate containing caffeine
  • Yerba mate: A stimulate containing the strength of coffee
  • Vitamin B12: A vitamin that helps boost energy
  • L-arginine: An amino acid that build proteins within the body

Side Effects

Le-Vel doesn’t state any side effects on their website. However, the individual ingredients within Thrive Patch can cause the following positive and negative side effects:

  • Heightened anxiety

  • Skin rashes

  • Nausea

  • Digestive issues

  • Stomach pain

  • Sleeplessness

Positive Effects
  • Reduced eye pressure

  • Suppressed asthma symptoms

  • Increased bone mineral density

  • Increased testosterone (helps with muscle building)

If you would like to try the Thrive Patch, you should consult a medical professional. You might be taking medications that when mixed with the patch's ingredients, could lead to a severe reaction, or your doctor might recommend an alternative avenue for you to lose weight.

Who Should Avoid Using the Thrive Patch?

Because of the nature of the ingredients, you should avoid using the Thrive Patch if you are:

  • Under 18 years of age
  • Breastfeeding
  • Pregnant
  • Prone to skin irritations or contact dermatitis
  • Prone to heart palpitations
  • Prone to massive headaches
  • Drink a lot of caffeine (caffeine could exacerbate headaches)

You also might want to avoid the patch when you feel ill, as potential nausea and stomach cramps could make your health ailment worse or cause you not to recover as quickly.

Is the Thrive Patch Worth the Money?

Currently, the research is statistically insignificant to properly show that the Thrive Patch can serve as an effective and valuable weight loss tool.

The product also isn’t helpful in listing how much of its ingredients are in the product itself, rendering the consumer unknowledgeable of how much they are ingesting into their bodies.

In addition, the Thrive Patch contains what Le-Vel calls Derma Fusion Technology (DFT), which is a “first of its kind” delivery system. Because this type of weight loss supplement (through a patch) is so new, no one is sure if it really works (or if it's even being absorbed into the skin) as no clinical, peer-reviewed studies have been performed to demonstrate its true effectiveness.

If you decide to try the Thrive Experience weight loss system, keep in mind that this product might not work and you could be out hundreds of dollars.

The best way to start a weight loss program is to speak with a medical professional and work on eating a healthy, colorful diet and following the American Heart Association’s recommendations for physical activity of at least 150 minutes of heart-pumping cardiovascular activity every week.
