Many families are opting to make their own baby food. Healthy recipes, like this chicken liver and avocado purée, are tasty and nutritious. You might be skeptical that your baby would eat either chicken liver or avocado, let alone both in the same meal. It's healthy and it's baby food, but will your baby like it? You are likely to be pleasantly surprised.

This is a great recipe to use if you've recently bought a whole roasting chicken for a family meal and you don't know what to do with the leftover chicken liver. There is no need to toss it out or use it for Fido's lunch. This makes a very nutritious meal for your baby.


  • 1 chicken liver
  • 2 cups vegetable stock (low-sodium)
  • 1 avocado, (ripe, peeled, and pitted)


  1. Thoroughly clean the chicken liver. Discard any fat, skin or connective tissue. Set aside.
  2. Pour 2 cups low-sodium vegetable stock or water into a small pot and bring to boil. Once the liquid has reached a slight boil, reduce the heat.
  3. Place the liver in the pot and simmer just until it is tender, approximately 6 to 7 minutes. Do not overcook.
  4. Remove the chicken liver from pot, reserving the liquid, and place it in a small bowl.
  1. Use a food mill or food processor to purée the cooked chicken liver until smooth.
  2. Add the avocado to the chicken liver and process it to mix it together smoothly.
  3. To achieve the desired consistency, add small amounts of the reserved liquid. Portion it into 3 or 4 (1-ounce) jars and refrigerate.

You can use the purée fresh or freeze it immediately for future use in an airtight container. Alternatively, vacuum seal portions in small packages and then freeze. While avocados are known to turn brown when refrigerated or frozen, your baby hasn't yet developed the same aversion to that discoloration as you have. Mixed together with the liver, the purée won't be green in any case.

When to Introduce Liver Into Your Baby's Diet

Though avocado is a great first food for baby, some medical professionals might suggest delaying the introduction of liver until the age of 9 months. Chicken liver does have a high concentration of vitamin A.

Because of that, do not serve liver more than once a week. High concentrations of vitamin A may lead to hypervitaminosis A. Talk with your doctor about when you can introduce meats to your baby.

Some babies will especially delight in eating this purée, hors d'oeuvres style. Spread a little on a cracker for a delightful snack.
