These days, bathroom scales have it all. They connect to your phone via Wi-Fi and determine everything from your body’s fat percentage to muscle mass. But sometimes, you just want to know what you weigh. The Greater Goods Digital Body Weight Bathroom Scale is one of those scales. If you want to keep things simple and are looking for a quality way to weigh yourself, is this the best choice? We tested it to find out.

Setup Process: No user manual needed

The setup for this scale is so simple, it doesn’t even come with a user manual: Just pull out the battery tab, and it’s ready to go. Our scale defaulted to pounds, but if you prefer kilograms, you can change the unit of measurement via the button on the back of the scale. Then, place the scale on a hard, even surface, step on, and weigh yourself. That’s it!

If you do need to reference the user manual, you can do so online. The scale comes with a URL (web page) to access the “digital manual.” There, you’ll find FAQs, troubleshooting, specs, and more that may help you understand your scale a little more.

Design: Low-profile

This scale is one of the thinnest we’ve seen to date, yet it still feels like one of the sturdiest, too. There’s no wobbliness when stepping onto it, and the tempered glass top feels thick. Tempered glass is made to be stronger than ordinary glass, but when it does break, it typically does so in tiny, harmless pieces rather than dangerous, jagged shards. You’ll still need to be careful, however; the company warns that the glass can shatter if it hits porcelain the wrong way (and users have posted pictures to prove it).

We love that if you need to use the scale in the dark or low light conditions, the bright LCD (liquid crystal display) screen clearly shows your weight.

Performance: Step on, step off technology

The Greater Goods Digital Body Weight Bathroom Scale weighs everything from 11 to 400 pounds. Using it is as simple as stepping on; due to its automatic calibration feature, there’s no need to tap first or wait for it to reset to zero. You may wish to do this anyway, though—especially if you tend to move the scale—or else the scale may display a weight heavier than you actually are. 

We found that the scale weighed quickly and accurately within seconds, and even after moving the scale, we never need to recalibrate it. Though the scale doesn’t have the same fancy features as some others, it does its job of measuring weight well.

Precision: Accurate

We tested our weight on multiple scales and found that the Greater Goods scale measured us about .04 pounds less than other scales. Because this is such a small amount, we don’t feel it’s a reason to discount the precision, especially since over many measurements at the same time, it consistently weighed us the same, even after moving the scale. Be sure that you use the scale on a hard, even surface for the most accurate measurement.

Compatibility: Manual app connection

Although the scale is not equipped with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, the company has an app called Weight Gurus (which is free and available on both Android and iOS) that it suggests you download and use to manually input your weight. Of course, you can also do this with any other app if you prefer not to download yet another one to your phone. 

Battery: Preloaded with CR2032 batteries

The Greater Goods scale uses two CR2032 batteries, which come preloaded at purchase. There is no battery level indicator, but the LCD will display “LO” when the batteries need to be changed. The manual doesn’t say how long the batteries can be expected to last, but scales of this sort typically last for a least a year with typical use. The only problem we foresee is not having any of these specific batteries laying around should you need them, since they're not as commonly used as AA or AAA batteries.

Price: A bargain for the quality

The scale sells for around $17, which is right in line with the cost of other similar scales (if not slightly less!). After using the product, we’re happy to pay that low cost for the quality of product the scale provides. The five-year limited manufacturer's warranty gives us confidence that the low price doesn’t correspond to bad craftsmanship and that the company stands behind the product.

Greater Goods Digital Body Weight Bathroom Scale vs. EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

We tested out another scale at the same, the EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale. The competing products have similar functions, including weight measurement, auto calibration, and a maximum weight of 400. They differ in design, however, and we felt much more comfortable stepping onto the slim, solid design of the Greater Goods scale rather than the translucent glass of the EatSmart scale. The EatSmart scale costs around $8 more, but it also comes with a measuring tape to track your body changes. This isn’t necessarily worth the extra price in our opinion, and in the end we prefer using the Greater Goods scale.
