If you are looking for a gluten-free bread that tastes like the traditional bread you know and love, your best bet may be to make it yourself. Fortunately, this doesn't mean you have to start from scratch. Today, there is an ever-widening range of gluten-free bread mixes that are a snap to make and offer the aroma, texture, and flavor you've long been craving.

Many of these mixes are available at upscale grocery and health food stores or ordered online. While they tend to be premium priced, they offer the soul satisfaction of a home-baked bread while avoiding the pitfalls of gluten intolerance.

Here are eight of the best gluten-free bread mixes on the market today:

Kinnikinnick Foods Gluten-Free Bread & Bun Mix

Kinnikinnick Foods offers what may be the easiest gluten-free bread mix of all. You simply add water, stir, and bake. The premix is made primarily with potato starch, pea starch, tapioca flour, and powdered whole eggs.

Their Kinnik-Kwik Bread and Bun Mix is entirely free of dairy, yeast, soy, and nuts and is shipped in a pack of six 35.5-ounce bags. With the aid of the University of Nebraska nutrition labs, Kinnikinnick certifies its foods to contain fewer than five parts per million (ppm) of gluten.

Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Homemade Wonderful Bread Mix

Bob's Red Mill has four gluten-free bread mixes to choose from: their GF Hearty Wholegrain Bread, GF Homemade Wonderful Bread, GF Cinnamon Raisin Bread, and GF Cornbread. Bob's Red Mill tests its products down to 20 ppm but does produce its gluten-free oats in the same factory as its other GF products.

The ingredients and preparation vary from product to product. The cornbread, for instance, calls for the addition of milk, eggs, and oil or butter. Their wholegrain and white loaves each require cider vinegar plus yeast (included), while the cinnamon-raisin bread only needs yeast. All but the cornbread can be easily made in a bread machine.

Glutino Gluten Free Pantry Favorite Sandwich Bread Mix

Glutino's Gluten-Free Pantry line of bread mixes includes their easy-to-make Favorite Sandwich Bread Mix, French Bread and Pizza Mix, and Yankee Cornbread and Muffin Mix. Both of the white bread mixes contain yeast and can be easily prepared in a bread maker.

Gluten-Free Pantry, like its parent company Glutino Inc., tests all of its product lines to fewer than 20 ppm of gluten.

King Arthur Flour Bread Mix

King Arthur Flour's Gluten-Free Bread Mix makes a hearty white sandwich bread, baked either in the oven or a bread maker. The mix, which contains rice flour, tapioca flour, potato starch, and yeast, is entirely free of soy and nuts. All you need to do is add milk, eggs, and oil or butter.

King Arthur Flour has a dedicated gluten-free facility, and its products are certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO) which requires testing to below 10 ppm of gluten. The mixes also are certified kosher.

Chébé Brazilian Cheese Bread Mix

Chébé Bread Products bases its bread mixes on pão de queijo, a traditional Brazilian cheese bread. The main ingredients come from the manioc plant, also known as yucca or cassava.

Traditionally, pão de queijo is made into small rolls, but Chébé's mix can be used to fashion a wide range of bread products including calzones, sandwich buns, tortillas, and crackers.

The bread mix is entirely yeast-free and only contains manioc, dry milk, and sea salt. The mix is made in a gluten-free facility and certified by the Celiac Sprue Association which requires testing down to five ppm.

Pamela's Products Gluten Free Bread Mix

Dedicated gluten-free manufacturer Pamela's Products makes two bread mixes: its more traditional Gluten-Free Bread Mix and its hearty Cornbread and Muffin Mix. The traditional bread mix includes sorghum flour, tapioca flour, millet flour, and yeast, while the cornbread mix includes cornmeal, tapioca flour, and potato starch.

All of Pamela's Products foods are tested to fewer than five ppm of gluten. The bread mixes are shipped in a pack of six 19-ounce bags, each of which makes a standard-size loaf.

Namaste Foods Gluten Free Bread & Roll Mix

Namaste Foods Gluten-Free Bread and Roll Mix is made from a combination of brown rice flour, sorghum flour, tapioca flour, millet flour, arrowroot, and yeast. All you need to do is add eggs, oil, and water.

Namaste products are made in a dedicated factory and contain no soy, corn, potato, dairy, casein, peanuts, or tree nuts. The products are also kosher-certified.

Orgran Gluten Free Easy Bake Bread Mix

Orgran makes both an Easy-Bake Bread Mix and a gluten-free Cornbread and Muffin Mix. The white bread mix is entirely dairy-free, yeast-free, egg-free, and vegan.

The cornbread mix, meanwhile, is made with non-GMO corn and is free of dairy, eggs, yeast, tree nuts, and soy. It is also vegan.
