Gary Gilles is a former writer for Verywell Fit. He is a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) whose involvement in diabetes began when his son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of nine months.

Gilles began his counseling practice in 1987 and served as a diabetes counselor at the Holy Family Medical Center in Des Plaines, Illinois for four years. He also acted as the editorial director of Chicago Caregiver Magazine from 2003 to 2008, a publication addressing the concerns and needs of professional and lay caregivers.

In addition to running his own practice, Gilles serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Chicago and Trinity International University, teaching and designing a full spectrum of psychology courses on-site and online. Much of his practice is devoted to managing and living with chronic illnesses, including diabetes.

Gilles earned an M.A. in counseling psychology from Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois and also holds a Master of Divinity (M.Div) degree from the same university.

Education

Gilles earned a B.A. in parks, recreation, leisure, and fitness studies at Indiana University, Bloomington in 1980 before shifting his academic focus to counseling and psychology. Following his undergraduate studies, Gilles concurrently earned an M.A. in clinical, counseling, and applied psychology and an M.Div in pastoral studies/counseling at Trinity International University in 1987.

Gilles obtained his license to practice as a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) in the state of Illinois in 1995.
