Whether you’re new to yoga or you practice regularly, having the right clothes for class can help you stay comfortable and distraction-free. “Your yoga clothes should be comfortable and allow you maximum range of motion. You're going to be bending, reaching, and maybe even upside down during your practice, so you want clothes that will move with you,” says Rebecca Stiles, RD, CYT 500, a yoga teacher and writer in Chicago, Illinois. When shopping for yoga clothes, there are options at a variety of price points. Some of our favorite brands include Girlfriend Collective, Prana Yoga, Outdoor Voices, and Athleta, although there are dozens of others to choose from. To build our list, we considered over 60 products, including pants, shorts, tops, bras, and coverups from 30 brands. Then, we evaluated each item for material, price, fit, size, comfort, and more. Based on our research, here are the best yoga clothes from the top brands on the market. And we love that they have a wide waistband that keeps them in place, plus sweat-wicking fabric to keep you feeling comfortable. They come in a range of bright colors and two inseams in sizes XXS through 6XL. If you like to keep your essentials close by while you practice, there’s a hidden pocket in the back for your cards or keys. However, they may be too lightweight to wear in cold weather. As a brand, Girlfriend Collective tops our list because they offer sustainable clothing in an inclusive range of sizes. While they feature a wider leg than a traditional yoga legging, a hidden drawstring in the waistband and a tapered ankle will keep them secure from Downward Facing Dog to Savasana. They’re made from moisture-wicking, recycled polyester and spandex that is designed to move with you. We like that they’re available in both regular and tall sizes ranging from small to 4XL and come in eight neutral colors. But they may run slightly long, so some wearers may find that they bunch up at the bottom. Nike is well-known for its high-quality and functional athletic clothing. They’re also committed to sustainability—the company is using more recycled material in their products, and they offer recycling and refurbishment programs for old clothing and footwear. Nike also aims to move towards zero carbon and zero waste. The polyester and spandex blend leaves a soft, brushed feel while providing just enough compression to support without interfering with your flow. These leggings come in over 40 colors and patterns—and at this budget-friendly price point, you may want to grab multiple pairs. We like that they also have two deep side pockets, one on each leg, a seamless waistband, and contoured seams with a sculpting effect. Colorfulkoala is relatively new to the activewear scene. The brand was founded in 2018 with a mission to make clothing that’s comfortable, durable, and affordable. And we like that they offer those who don’t love the tightness of a legging a little more room for your legs to breathe. Vuori is known for its incredibly soft, lightweight clothing, and these joggers are no exception. They’re also made to last and are worth the investment. If you’re planning to wear these for more than yoga, you may miss having pockets, but you can pair them with a light jacket for running errands (or throw your keys in your yoga bag). Vuori not only makes high-quality, comfortable clothes, but they do it with strong values. They’re committed to safe and healthy working conditions, fair labor practices, and creating community. They take a multi-pronged approach to sustainability, choosing eco-friendly materials, reducing waste, and offsetting 100% of their carbon footprint. The elastic waistband with an internal drawstring paired with the fitted base layer keeps everything in place while you bend and stretch. We like that the moisture-wicking, quick-drying base layer will keep you comfortable in all temperatures (including hot yoga), though the dual layers may feel too warm for some. Zippered side pockets make it easy to carry any personal items to and from class. They’re budget-friendly and available in a variety of colors and sizes, including tall sizes. Plus, some wearers note that these shorts are similar to those made by lululemon. Old Navy is a great option for clothes that range from classic to trendy. Their sizing goes up to 4XL in most items, and they have made several commitments to improving their environmental impact: The brand is using recyclable materials, eliminating plastic bags in stores, and reducing their water usage. We like that the classic design can be paired with almost any shorts or pants, taking you straight to the coffee shop or to run errands after class. However, it only comes in one color. Also, Manduka offers a smaller size range than many other brands on our list—most products are available in sizes from XS to XL. Manduka was built on the belief of “yoga for all,” making products that support you in your practice at any experience level. Plus, we like that the hem has grips to keep the tank top in place, whether you’re practicing a headstand or stretching tall in Mountain Pose. Like other Athleta clothes, you can trust that the slightly higher price point comes with long-lasting quality, and it can be worn for higher-impact activities beyond yoga. It’s made with nylon, lycra, and polyester and is designed to mold to your body while wicking away sweat. We like that the adjustable straps can be converted from cross-back to classic, so you can change it up to fit your own style. And although this particular top may not have enough support for wearers with larger busts, Outdoor Voices offers bras and tops with different levels of support. Outdoor Voices wants to get everyone moving by creating functional activewear with the planet in mind. They strive to create clothing that has longevity, reducing the amount that goes into landfills and using recycled and sustainable materials whenever possible. The seamless knit fabric has a barely-there feel but can still wick away sweat. We like the mesh panel cutouts and perforations, which add breathability while creating a stylish, unique design. The wide waistband won’t pinch or move as you bend and stretch, a key feature in yoga so you can focus on your practice, not your pants. But they aren’t offered in as many sizes as other items on our list are. Also, these leggings may be too long for some wearers since they’re only offered in one inseam length. Sweaty Betty is a British activewear company dedicated to creating stylish clothes that meet your performance needs. And we like that the leggings have medium compression and no side seams, so they’ll feel comfortable all day long. Both the fitted crop top and leggings feature four-way stretch fabric that won’t budge, making them a great pick for other workouts with a lot of movement, like using a rowing machine. The eight-way stretch fabric moves with you as you flow, while the waistband can be worn up for extra support or folded over. They provide just enough compression without feeling restrictive. They’re so comfortable, flattering, and moisture-wicking that you’ll want to wear them for more than just yoga. But they’re more expensive than other options on our list, and they only come in black. Lorna Jane’s philosophy is empowering people to live active lives they love. The Australian company prioritizes making quality clothing using sustainable and recycled materials. Their pieces are designed to flow from one activity to another, ultimately reducing the number of items you need and, therefore, your environmental footprint. It provides light support and comes in two different styles: One designed for B/C cups and one for D/DD cups with thicker straps. The molded foam cups provide coverage and won’t shift while you stretch (or in the wash), while the sweat-wicking fabric will keep you cool and comfortable. We like that the criss-cross straps provide nice support with an attractive design that can be worn under a top or on its own. Plus, this bra has a longline silhouette and is made from soft, silky material—you may even forget you’re wearing it. It’s available in sizes two to 14, but it may run small, so consider sizing up. lululemon is a top brand in the yoga and activewear category, known for its high-quality clothing, especially leggings. They provided expert opinions on which features to consider when shopping for the best yoga clothing. Then, we researched over 60 products, including pants, shorts, shirts, and bras, from 30 different activewear brands. We evaluated each product based on material, design, price, fit, comfort, and more. We also considered each brand’s average price point, size range, and commitment to sustainability. What to Look for in Yoga Clothes Material Yoga clothes are made from a variety of materials and fabrics. Common materials include polyester, nylon, elastane, spandex, and newer fibers like TENCEL. “You will most likely find that polyester is accompanied by spandex, which creates that lovely stretch,” Bentz says. “The downside to polyester is that it can hold onto odors like most other synthetic fibers, so washing after use [if you sweat] is ideal,” she adds. If sustainability is important to you, many brands use recycled polyester. It offers similar functional benefits as synthetic polyester, but it may come at a higher price point. TENCEL and other plant-based fabrics are another good choice. “These are natural fibers that are breathable, absorbent to sweat, resistant to odor and bacteria, so they won’t smell over time,” Bemis says. “The best fabric depends on the style of yoga you practice. If your yoga practice is vigorous or heated, you probably need a fabric that wicks sweat away from the skin and dries quickly. Most synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon fall in this category,” Stiles says. For those with a less intense practice, just choose clothing that is breathable and moves with you, like Nike’s Yoga Dri-FIT Pants. Price The price of yoga clothes can vary from one brand to another. You can find yoga leggings for as little as $25 per pair and as high as $150 per pair. On average, most leggings from activewear or yoga-specific companies will cost between $80-$120 per pair. Sports bras will typically range from $30-$70, and tops may be anywhere from $25-$80. The quality and longevity of a product are often reflected in the price. Also, remember that “you don’t need a huge wardrobe of yoga clothes. Less is more,” Stiles says. And at the end of the day, as long as it’s comfortable for you, you can practice yoga in most lounge clothes. Size Range The range of sizes will vary by brand. Most brands include XS through XL, though some extend beyond that. Athleta, for example, offers most of its products from XXS to 3XL. Girlfriend Collective is another great option, with sizes up to 6XL. When shopping for bottoms, many companies offer different inseams or lengths, like Nike. Fit It’s important to find a balance between length and compression. Choose clothes that fit comfortably and won’t move while you shift between poses. “Your clothes shouldn't be a distraction. If you're constantly adjusting clothing or worried about exposing too much skin, you won't be able to focus on your practice,” Stiles says. Frequently Asked Questions What should I wear to my first yoga class? Most importantly, choose something that is comfortable and allows you to move. Cotton or athletic shorts or leggings paired with a semi-fitted t-shirt or tank top, and even the right workout underwear, are a great place to start. Avoid baggy shirts that may ride up while you’re upside down or wide, flowy pants that you could trip over as you move through different poses. Are compression leggings good for yoga? They can be—ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference. “The appeal of compression leggings is they hold everything in place while you move. This can be a nice benefit if it makes your practice more comfortable. However, your clothes shouldn't make you feel squeezed or pinched. And you certainly wouldn't want your leggings to be so tight it restricted the movement of your breath in the low belly,” Stiles says. Is there a difference between leggings and yoga pants? These terms may often be used interchangeably. However, leggings usually refer to a wider range of pants that includes yoga pants, lounging pants, and even leggings worn for fashion purposes. Leggings also can come in a variety of materials and weights, some of which may not be appropriate for yoga (like fleece). “Yoga pants are often made of softer variations of polyester and spandex or natural fibers,” Bentz says.
