Listening to your favorite song, audiobook, or podcast can be a huge motivator when you’re running. But if you don’t have the right headphones, runs can feel annoying and stressful as you fidget with your device to get the right fit and sound. The best running headphones are comfortable, durable, and will fit within your budget.

Tested & Approved

The Bose Sport Earbuds are our top pick for their exceptional sound quality, lightweight, comfortable design, and secure fit. We also love the Skullcandy Push Active Wireless Earbuds because they offer great durability and performance at a budget-friendly price.

Other important considerations when searching for the perfect running headphones are sound quality and battery life. When wearing headphones, it’s still important that you’re able to hear ambient sounds near you—like traffic, pedestrians, and animals— as an added safety precaution on the road. “The key thing to look for is the ability to run with one earbud, to easily control volume, and turn off sound when you want to be even more in tune with what's happening around you,” Amanda Brooks, certified running coach and personal trainer, says.

To put the top headphones to the test, our tester ran outdoors at a variety of paces in sweaty conditions to get a feel for the sound quality, fit, functionality, comfort, and performance.

According to our research and testing, here are the best running headphones on the market.

When it comes to sound quality, Bose Sport Earbuds are truly best in class for wireless earbuds, which is why we chose them as our best overall pick for running. Our tester found that the sound was crisp, powerful, and clear at all volumes. Setting them up was a cinch, as they quickly paired to an iPhone. It was also easy to adjust the volume, pause music, or take a call using the simple touch controls.

The buds come with three sizes of StayHear Max tips so you can customize your fit, and the flexible wings keep them in place. The earbuds felt secure during our test, even on a fast-paced run, which contributed to their 4.5 out of 5 rating for fit.

This pair is also water- and sweat-resistant, earning a score of 4.5 out of 5 for durability. The charging case isn’t as portable as others we tested, like the AirPods Pro, but it’s still fairly compact and quickly charges the buds.

With a water resistance rating of IPX4, they can handle vigorous workouts and didn’t slip once our tester started sweating. Overall, they felt comfortable and secure, earning a nearly perfect score of 4.5 out of 5 for fit.

The AirPods Pro also have much better call quality than other earbuds we tested, so they’re a nice option for those who sometimes have to multi-task while running. But in terms of battery life, the buds lasted only 4.5 hours on a single charge, which was one of the lowest battery lives of all headphones we tested.

Of course, the AirPods Pro’s best attribute—its active noise cancellation—isn’t too useful for outdoor runners since they may not be able to hear their surroundings. How We Rated the Running Headphones

4.8 to 5 stars: These are the best running headphones we tested. We recommend them without reservation.

4.5 to 4.7 stars: These running headphones might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them.

4.0 to 4.4 stars: We think these are great running headphones, but others are better.

3.5 to 3.9 stars: These running headphones are just average.

3.4 and below: We don't recommend running headphones with this rating; you won't find any on our list.

How We Selected and Tested the Best Running Headphones

To select the best running headphones, we researched over 25 products from top retailers and considered their features, comfort, price, and durability. Then, our tester ran with ten different headphones for over 50 hours. Our tester ran at a variety of paces on pavement and a treadmill while wearing each pair of headphones.

After the test, we evaluated each set for its ease of use, sound quality, fit, durability, safety, noise cancellation, and battery life, and scored each of these six key attributes on a scale of 1 (would not recommend) to 5 (highly recommend). We also gave each device a value score by comparing the cost of the pair to its overall quality. Finally, each set of headphones was given an overall star rating, which reflects our general impression of the device and its performance and whether or not we would recommend it to a friend. Of the ten headphones we tested, nine scored well enough to be included in our list of the best picks.

What to Look for in Running Headphones

Comfort

The last thing you want while you’re running is to have to deal with uncomfortable headphones. You want to make sure the pair you choose fits securely in place. Some are ergonomically designed, but it will be a matter of preference as to which style is most comfortable for you.

“Wireless is a great benefit,” Lisa Landrum, certified running coach and owner of Forward Motion CLT, says. “Messing with wires isn’t fun while sitting down—if we add movement into the equation, we may get even more tangled up in that rat’s nest of thin wires.”

Durability

Runners can be tough on earphones, with various unpredictable outdoor elements and all of that bouncing, so you want a pair that can go the distance. Many are waterproof, and some even tout their washer-proof capability, which is great for those of us who constantly find our earphones in the pockets of our running shorts after they’ve been through the wash.

“Many runners assume that all headphones are water resistant, which just isn't the case,” Brooks says. “Most are sweat resistant, so you can enjoy your summer days without issue, but they aren't designed to be worn in the rain. I like to see an IPX rating above 3 to be safe.”

Safety

If you log lots of outdoor miles, you definitely need to consider safety issues when choosing headphones. “It’s important to make sure we can hear what’s happening around us,” Landrum says. “There are brands that allow you to hear music or a podcast without totally blocking out outside noises.” Look for headphones that allow you to turn off any noise-canceling features.

Battery Life

You don’t want to have to charge the battery after every single run, so look for headphones that can go for at least five hours on a single charge. If you’re a long-distance runner, you may want to bump that up to nine hours or more.

Price

If you’re someone who frequently loses your earbuds, runs just once in a while, or is on a budget, you might not want to shell out big bucks for headphones. Luckily, there are many solid pairs with quality sound that won’t break the bank.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the benefits of listening to music or podcasts while working out?

“Sometimes, we all need a distraction from our miles. A great way to help the time pass is by listening to music, a book, or a podcast on our runs,” Landrum says.

Listening to music or podcasts while performing some types of workouts can help keep you moving longer. Low-intensity cardiovascular activity, in particular, may be best performed while listening to music. Music may even increase the duration of your exercise session.

  • How often should you clean your headphones?

Cleaning your headphones frequently can help prevent bacteria and oils from building up. Ideally, wipe down your headphones after each workout session to remove sweat and oil. Cleaning them once a week is recommended at a minimum.

  • How do you keep your headphones in place while working out?

Properly fitting headphones won’t move around while you exercise, so choose the size that is right for your ears or ones that can be adjusted. If you have trouble keeping your current pair in place, try wearing a headband over your ears. For wired headphones, you can try threading the wire under your shirt to prevent it from catching or pulling and removing your headphones from your ears.

  • How to keep headphones from falling out while running

Choosing the right headphones is key to keeping them from falling out while running. Look for sweat-proof headphones, so they don’t become slippery and slide out. Most earbuds come with multiple ear tips for different ear sizes to help keep them in securely.

“A pair that bounces around or falls out constantly leads to frustration and interrupts the flow of your run,” Brooks says. She recommends taking the time to read the device’s instructions on how to get the best fit.

  • Do marathon runners listen to music?

Yes, some marathon runners listen to music both during their training and the race itself. Most marathons allow race participants to use headphones in the race, as long as they aren’t competing for a prize.
