How We Selected and Tested the Best Running Backpacks

To determine the best running backpacks, we purchased and tested ten running backpacks and evaluated each based on five key attributes—including storage, comfort, stability and bounce prevention, fit and adjustability, and chafing protection. We then scored each attribute with a rating of 1 to 5 (with 5 being beyond excellent, and 1 being horrible). In addition, each backpack received a value score, which mirrors the value of each backpack by comparing its price to its quality. We also gave each backpack an overall star rating which reflects whether or not we would recommend the backpack to a friend. 

For our testing process, we wore each backpack for a series of three runs: a 30-minute easy-paced run, a 30-minute faster-paced run, and a 60-minute easy-paced run. Since the backpacks have a wide capacity range, we put different items in them, depending on their size. 

At a minimum, each backpack was filled with an energy gel, a protein bar, an iPhone, a house key and car key, and credit card. For the hydration backpacks, the bladder was filled with water. We also put a 14-inch laptop and change of clothes in the backpacks with larger capacities, such as ones recommended for run commuting, to test their storage capabilities.

What to Look for in a Running Backpack

Design and Type

You need a running backpack designed to fit your needs. “Running backpacks can hold hydration, fuel, your keys, phone, or any other things that you want to carry with you on your run,” Sheu says. Consider how you’ll be using it and what you’ll carry to determine the size you need.

Backpacks on the market range from minimalist to large capacity. If you are using a backpack for short runs (10 miles or less), a smaller backpack without loads of pockets should suffice. For runners training for marathons or ultramarathons, or trail runners who have to bring all their own hydration, a larger backpack that holds more fluids and gear is likely more suitable.

Fit

Make sure the backpack sits high up on your back and can be adjusted to create a tight, comfortable fit. Anything bouncing around will create more work for your body and can cause painful chafing.

A running backpack should be very snug against the back, move freely with the body, and not bounce. You should be able to move your arms without your elbows hitting the pack. “You want to be sure that the running backpack does not rub or move too much, which can cause chafing,” Sheu says.

Closures and Straps

Make sure that the closures are secure and easy to use. Some running backpacks have shoulder and chest straps, while others also have a waist strap for an even more secure fit. Any straps should be adjustable and made of a very breathable fabric to avoid overheating and chafing.

    Your backpack should sit 2 inches from your shoulders and not lower down on your back. Some runners position the running backpack low on the back, but this can create imbalance as you move and cause you to lean forward, leading to a risk of back pain.

  • Will a running backpack slow me down?

    When you carry anything extra, your body must make more of an effort. Additional weight places stress on your joints and muscles. To avoid this, try to lighten the backpack as much as you can and only carry what is necessary. If possible, keep supplemental hydration somewhere else (such as your car) and refill your backpack rather than carrying all your liquid for your entire run.

    Also, keep your shoulder straps tight, which will help minimize shifting of the liquids in your pack. If the contents of your running backpack are moving around, your muscles have to work harder.
