Protein bars can be the perfect bridge to get you to your next meal as well as a nutrient-dense fuel to replenish tired muscles after a workout. However, a large portion of them are devoid of nutrition and often filled with sugar, additives, sodium, and highly processed ingredients.

When searching for a protein bar you should look for a bar with more grams of protein than grams of sugar. Second, the fewer ingredients the better (anything with over 10 ingredients should be avoided) Third, go for fiber. Americans, in general, are lacking in the fiber consumption so bars with 4 or more grams is ideal.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Health Warrior Pumpkin Seed

This bar checks all boxes: more protein than sugar, less than ten ingredients and contains fiber. The problem with many protein bars and packaged snacks, in general, is that the ingredients are so heavily processed that they become unrecognizable from the whole food they started with.

Health Warrior Pumpkin Seed bars are as close to whole foods as you can get. You can actually see the whole pumpkin seeds (these are also the number one ingredient). Pumpkin seeds are full of stress-reducing magnesium as well as mood and immune-boosting zinc

Best for Women: Naturally Clean Eats

Vegan Protein Bars | Naturally Clean Eats Gluten-Free Snacks for Healthy Energy & Nutrition | Made with Prebiotics, No Added Sugar & All-Natural Ingredients | Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip 6 Pack

This vegan, gluten-free bar is an excellent choice for women on the go. Packed with nutrient-dense ingredients such as quinoa, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds and flaxseeds this bar is as nutritious as it is delicious and many of my female clients note they can eat half of the bar and feel completely satisfied.

The variety of nuts and seeds provide a nice dose of healthy fats that are both hormone supporting and incredibly satiating. This bar is also filled with 10 grams of fiber from chicory root, a known prebiotic that supports gut health by feeding the good bacteria in the body.

Best Budget: Kind Bar

Thank goodness for KIND Bar’s 5 gram of sugar option. These bars are not only affordable but they are everywhere. From drug stores to gas stations, these bars are fabulous for those moments where you may have forgotten to plan and are stuck with limited options. KIND does not use genetically modified ingredients and their bars are gluten-free. Try this bar if you want a sweet, satiating snack without the extra sugar.

Best Dairy-Free: Raw Crunch

If the ideal snack existed in a package, Raw Crunch Bars would take a gold medal. Organic, gluten and dairy-free, these bars are full of plant-based protein from a variety of nuts and seeds as well as fiber, and an ingredient that many Americans do not consume enough of—Vitamin E. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant in the prevention of cognitive decline, coronary artery disease, and cancer and one bar contains 15% of the recommended daily intake.

Best Allergen-Free: Elemental Superfood

Mulberry Cacao + Spirulina Seedbar (12 bars per pack)

Bars that are free of common allergens but not filled with excess junk are hard to come by. Enter Elemental Superfoods. These bars and granola were created out of the founder’s need for on the go snacks that would fit her daughter’s dietary restrictions.

Free of soy, egg, gluten, and dairy these bars are great for anyone following an anti-inflammatory diet or looking for snacks that support whole food, plant-based style of eating. Most of the ingredients used in these bars are organic and raw which are easier for the body to digest and absorb.

The Mulberry, Cacao, and Spirulina is equal in grams of protein and sugar and features potent ingredients such as mulberry (high in vitamin C and plant-based iron), energy-boosting cacao and protein-rich spirulina.

Best for Men: Papa Steve's

Looking for a bar with some extra oomph? Papa Steve’s can be consumed as an on-the-go mini-meal or as a satisfying post-workout snack. Depending on the flavor, these bars contain anywhere from 13-20 grams of protein, over 50% of the recommended daily intake for fiber and less than ten grams of sugar. In fact, the sugar in each bar comes from raw, organic dates and fruit.

Papa Steve’s offers a variety of products to satisfy consumers who may be vegan as well as consumers looking for bars without nuts.

Best Keto: Primal Kitchen

Primal Kitchen’s Coconut Lime Protein Bars, 3 Bars, 1.34 oz (38g) Each

Primal Kitchen makes fabulous products that are low in sugar and high in real food ingredients. Their protein bars are newer to the market and differ in taste and texture from Primal Kitchen’s Collagen Bars. Though they have slightly less grams of protein, the protein is sourced from eggs rather than bovine collagen which means this is a suitable option for vegetarians. In addition to 8 grams of protein there are only 2 grams of sugar and 5 grams of fiber.

Best for Fiber: Aloha

Aloha Chocolate Mint Organic Protein Bar

Aloha’s protein bars are almost as high in fiber as they are high in protein. Made from primarily organic ingredients, these plant-based bars contain almost 50% of the recommended daily intake of fiber. The high fiber content comes from tapioca fiber which is an indigestible starch that is extracted from the roots of the cassava plant. Tapioca fiber is a soluble fiber that can help slow blood sugar spikes from a high carbohydrate intake as well as regulating the absorption of dietary fat and cholesterol.
