The Best Plyo Boxes, Tested and Reviewed

Verywell Fit / Leticia Almeida

Plyometric boxes, also known as plyo boxes, can be used to conduct plyometric exercises, which are high-impact exercises that focus on your stretch reflexes. They come in a variety of sizes and styles and are adjustable to meet your different jump or step goals.

We tested 21 top-rated plyo boxes in The Verywell Testing Lab to find the best on the market. Our team of fitness editors (each with different fitness backgrounds and levels of experience with plyo boxes) evaluated each box for stability, adjustability, sturdiness, and overall value—scoring each product on a scale from 1 (would not recommend) to 5 (highly recommend) for each attribute. Products included in our list scored high in most key categories.

We also had a NASM-certified personal trainer from our Review Board review this article for accuracy surrounding what to look for when purchasing a plyo box, how large it should be, and how to properly use it.

Pros

  • Extremely stable

Cons
  • No handles for portability

  • Expensive

We loved this plyo box for its amazing stability, secure sturdiness, 3-in-1 use, and overall value. After receiving a perfect score in three out of four key categories, the Tru Grit 3-in-1 plyo box was an obvious choice for our top overall pick.

The box was perfectly stable and did not shift or move during any of the six exercises, even box jumps. We liked that the box was comfortable yet firm, and never felt unsafe or unstable. It’s also usable at three different heights but doesn’t have handles, making it a tad difficult to move and flip.

This Tru Grit plyo box is a wooden box that’s padded with foam and covered in a non-slip surface. Typically, foam boxes are made with a solid foam core, making this box unique in that it delivers extra sturdiness from its wooden frame and softness from its foam padding. This is one of the most versatile and functional options on the market. And while it isn't the most affordable on our list, we believe this plyo box is truly the best and well worth its price tag.

Cons

This Ultra Fitness Gear Wooden Plyo Box is made with a non-slip coating that will truly keep you from slipping, whether you're stepping or jumping on the box. It stands out for it's stability, sturdiness, and overall value.

During testing, we felt safe and stable throughout all six workouts. The box didn’t move or tilt, even when used on different surfaces like grass. We also like that this box is made from ¾ inch plywood—making it extremely durable and suitable for a variety of workouts, yet easy to lift because of its accessible handles.

While this specific box may be best for beginners (because of its lower height levels),  Ultra Fitness Gear offers the same box in a variety of sizes so you can find the right fit for you.

Cons

We like this box for its space-saving, budget-friendly properties—scoring it high for overall value because of its great features and even better price tag. The box has solid support and great overall versatility. The lowest height is great for beginners, and the highest height is great for advanced users.

For such a small box, it has decent stability, but we wouldn’t recommend jumping up onto this one for exercises like box jumps. The box is repositionable to three different heights, making it suitable for both beginners and more advanced users. We also found this pick to be extremely durable and solid enough for long-lasting use.

Pros

Cons

This Sunny Health and Fitness plyo box topped our list for the most versatile option because of its 3-in-1 usability and detachable foam covering. We found these features, along with the accessible cut-out handles, to be really functional for a variety of workouts and fitness levels.

This plyo box didn’t fall short on stability and sturdiness either: Throughout all six exercises (with the exception of calf raises), we found that the box did not wobble or move. It felt perfectly sturdy and safe, even when the foam covering was added. The box adjusts to three different heights, offering a versatile workout. It also gives you the ability to wrap it in foam, and even wrapped in foam it's very stable and usable.

We docked a half point on overall value because it’s one of the more expensive options on our list. But if you’re looking to splurge for versatility, this is the plyo box for you.

Pros

Cons
  • Not challenging for more advanced users

GarageFit’s wooden plyo box stands out for its exceptional stability and sturdiness. We found that the box felt perfectly stable for the entirety of each circuit and liked that it had a large surface area to step and jump on. Throughout testing, we never felt wobbly, unsafe, or unbalanced, thanks to the solid wooden surface and heavy-duty construction.

Plus, the box has handles and is easy to flip onto different sides for more height versatility. And it's coating provided a great, non-slip grip, which was appreciated during exercises that required standing or jumping on the box. Compared to others on our list, the height of this box may not be the most challenging. Luckily, GarageFit sells the same box in different dimensions for higher levels and more advanced workouts.

Cons

Philosophy Gym’s 3-in-1 plyo box was the most lightweight box we tested—without sacrificing stability, adjustability, and sturdiness. We loved this box because of its lightweight nature, finding it super easy to pick up and carry around (even though it doesn't have handles), as well as adjusting to three different height settings.

We like that the box is made with a dense foam core and covered in a durable fabric for comfortable, non-slip, and long-lasting use. We found that the box was most stable when used on its wider sides as opposed to the more narrow sides. But overall, if you need a lightweight option (that could work great in a home gym), this Philosophy Gym 3-in-1 Plyo Box is great.

Pros
  • Strong steel construction

  • Non-Slip surface

  • Easily adjustable and portable

Cons
  • Small landing surface area

  • Expensive

If you want a solid and dependable (but not large and bulky) plyo box, we recommend this one. The Rep Fitness plyo box saves space without losing functionality—making it ideal for small living areas or home gyms that have already dedicated real estate to larger fitness equipment, such as elliptical machines and treadmills.

We found this box to be one of the most stable and sturdy out of all the products we tested, especially for its rather small size. For each exercise, including box jumps, we felt completely safe and steady. Unlike the others on our list, you don’t flip this one for different height levels. Instead, it features convenient and easy-to-use knobs to adjust the height. Although this adjustability mechanism can be convenient for those with a smaller space, it doesn’t offer as much height variety as classic 3-in-1 plyo boxes, which is why we gave it a lower score for adjustability.

Cons

This box has one of the lowest available heights out of all the boxes we tested. Plus, you can purchase additional platforms to stack on top—making it the perfect option for beginners because it can truly grow with you. Like balance boards, which help build strength and flexibility, it offers novices a great way to augment their fitness regimen.

What’s more, the box is made of soft, impact-absorbing foam, great for those just getting started with plyometric exercises. We liked that the box felt perfectly stable to push off of or step on with both hands and feet. But we did find it a bit expensive for its somewhat basic features.

For beginners who are looking for a safe and comfortable box that can take you to new heights, we recommend this Rep Fitness plyo box. It's easy to adjust and provides a more soft, cushioned surface.

Pros
  • Comes with four height levels

  • Extremely sturdy

  • Boxes nest for simple storage

Cons

  • Not suitable for all exercises

With heavy-duty steel construction, a grippy landing surface, and non-slip rubber pads on all four corners, this set of plyo boxes is suitable for your most explosive workouts. We love that it comes at four different height levels, which is more than most of the other boxes we tested.

This set of boxes is great for stepping or jumping on, but we did find that pushing off causes the boxes to tilt off the ground. We favored the versatile height range of this set while also noting that the highest level may be slightly intimidating for beginners. Overall, the JFIT plyo box set is worth its high price if you're looking for a long-lasting, durable, and versatile set of plyo boxes.

How We Tested The Plyo Boxes

To generate our list of the best plyo boxes on the market, our team of fitness editors (who come from different fitness backgrounds and levels of experience with plyo boxes) tested 21 top-rated plyo boxes in The Verywell Testing Lab. We evaluated each box while completing a series of six different exercises—box step-ups, box push-ups, box calf raises, box dips, lateral box step-ups, and box jumps. We then rated each box for the following four key categories.

Stability

The first key category we tested for was stability. It is essential that you feel stable at all times when using a plyo box, especially during exercises that require stepping or jumping on and off the box. We paid attention to how stable each box felt and how safe we felt on it while completing each exercise. Plyo boxes received a high rating in this area if they didn’t shift around and if we were able to complete all six moves without feeling unstable or insecure.

Adjustability

If you’re unsure of the exact height you want in a plyo box or are looking for one with multiple heights, adjustability is a key factor. Some plyo boxes come with sides of different heights, making them easily repositionable. We evaluated each plyo box on how many heights it offered, giving the highest scores to boxes with several height settings. The Rogue Flat Pack Games Box is a great 3-in-1 option.

testing the best plyo boxes

Verywell Fit / Jessica Juliao

Sturdiness

Sturdiness is another vital factor we tested plyo boxes for in the Lab. Regardless of its material, you want the box to feel completely solid when pushing, stepping, or jumping on and off. Boxes that received a high rating in this area felt solid and did not squish down when we applied pressure. We recommend the JFIT Plyometric Box Set for a durable and sturdy plyo box set.

Overall Value

After rating the above attributes, we determined if, in terms of cost, the plyo box was of good value. High scores were awarded to boxes that we believe worked very well and were worth their price tag (or even more budget-friendly than we expected).

What to Look for in a Plyo Box

Height Range

Plyo boxes are primarily designed for jumping. So you’ll want to make sure the box you select is tall enough to make your jumps challenging—but short enough to suit your skill level. When in doubt, look for a 3-in-1 box or an adjustable box, like the Rogue Flat Pack Games Box. These boxes will provide you with a few different height options without forcing you to stock up on extra equipment, making it easy to find a height that works for you.

testing the Sunny Health & Fitness plyo box

Verywell Fit / Jessica Juliao

Material

Plyo boxes are often crafted from foam, wood, or steel—three materials that offer very different tactile experiences. If you’re a beginner, you may want a softer box crafted from foam, like the Rogue Echo Foam Games Box. And if you’d prefer an adjustable option, you’ll probably end up with a box made of steel.

Weight Capacity

You’ll want to make sure the plyo box is sturdy enough to support you. After all, you’ll be jumping on and off of it a lot. So double-check the box’s training load before buying. And keep in mind any weights you plan to wear or use while jumping.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I use a plyo box?

Using a plyo box is actually really simple. Just place the box on the ground, stand facing the box, and jump onto it—planting both of your feet on the box at the same time. To make sure you stick the landing, you’ll want to start with your feet planted firmly under your hips—and with your toes about 6 inches away from the box. When you land, make sure most of your weight is in the balls of your feet. And double-check that your feet are still about hip-width apart once you’re on top of the box.

Plyo boxes can be used for other exercises, too, like step-ups, Bulgarian split squats, front-foot-elevated reverse lunges, and more.

  • What height plyo box should I get?

To get the most out of your plyo box workouts, you’ll want a plyo box that’s tall enough to challenge you—but not too tall to jump on top of. (Remember, if you’re sacrificing your form, you probably need to scale back.) This just-right height will vary from person to person. So start with a shorter box, and look for an adjustable or 3-in-1 box you can use to try a few different heights.

  • What can you expect to pay for a plyo box?

You can expect to pay between $50-$300 for a quality plyo box that will support you throughout your plyometric exercises. Budget-friendly options are better suited for lower-impact moves, while more expensive plyo boxes are often strong enough for your most intense box jumps. The cheapest on our list is often available at $48, whereas our top recommendation, Tru Grit’s 3-in-1 Plyo Box, was $200 when we published this list.
