The  average cost is higher than some other sports watches, but many runners feel Garmin’s performance, durability, and accuracy are worth the investment. Compared to basic fitness trackers from brands such as Fitbit, Garmin running watches are generally more feature-packed, offering extensive tracking and analysis of your activity. And Garmin also has some basic options, like the Forerunner 55, that are a great value, but still feature spot-on GPS, in-depth tracking, and a good battery life.

The watch is so comfortable that it’s easy to forget you’re wearing it, even to sleep.

Of course, with a budget-friendly price, the Vivosmart 5 doesn’t offer premium features such as built-in GPS or music storage. But you can connect to your smartphone’s GPS to track your outdoor walks, runs, and hikes. To choose the best Garmin running watches, we first asked ultramarathoner and RRCA-certified coach Erica Gminski and Michelle Furniss, CPT, certified personal trainer and general manager at Xplor Coach, for their expert recommendations and tips on what to look for when selecting a device.

With their advice in mind, we researched Garmin’s products and evaluated them for accuracy, design, features, battery life, price, and more. Our team of testers used some of the watches for a few weeks and then rated them from 1 (would not recommend) to 5 (excellent) based on fit, accuracy, comfort, features, battery life, and overall value. 

What to Look For in a Garmin Running Watch

GPS Accuracy

Garmin is well-known for its GPS accuracy and, with the exception of the Vivosmart 5, all of the watches listed here come with built-in GPS. Its GPS uses multiple navigation satellite systems, which not only produces more accurate tracking, but also helps prevent dropped signals when you’re surrounded by tall trees or buildings.

The GPS technology in a Garmin watch also helps with navigation, allowing you to pre-define a route and check where you are on a map during your run, Furniss says. If you choose a Garmin device with GPS, you can feel confident that you’re getting accurate, reliable tracking.

Battery Life

A long-lasting battery is a top priority for most runners, especially marathoners and other endurance athletes, Gminski says. Garmin devices can last anywhere from 7 to 34 days in smartwatch mode and 6 to 42 hours in GPS mode on a full charge. Some models, such as the Enduro 2, offer solar charging while on the wrist, which may be useful if you're out on a trail for an entire day, says Gminski.

If battery life is the most important feature for you, take a look at the Enduro 2, which lasts up to 34 days in smartwatch mode and 150 hours in GPS mode on a single charge. The Instinct 2 also has an impressive battery life of up to 28 days in smartwatch mode and up to 30 hours in GPS mode.

Screen Size and Resolution

The screens’ resolution varies quite a bit, but all displays are clear and easy to read. In general, the better the resolution, the higher the price, so you’ll pay extra if you like a crisp, eye-popping display.

Features 

When shopping, check that the watch supports your favorite activities. If you’re really into running, the Forerunner 955 and Fenix 7 watches are easy to customize and provide a lot of data that may be useful for training and racing, Gminski says. Although all Garmin devices are water-resistant, some watches, like the Fenix 7, are more suitable for open water swimming than others. If you like to hike and explore new routes, the Enduro 2 and Fenix 7 are great for their advanced navigation features.

“You also want to check integrations with music apps such as Spotify and payments such as GarminPay, which allows you to grab a protein shake or coffee post-workout and pay using your watch,” Furniss says. Plus, you should consider if you want a Garmin watch that’s equipped with app alerts, text notifications, and call-answering capabilities, so you can stay up-to-date on the go.
