Affordable Pilates Equipment

How to create an at-home Pilates gym on a budget

If you're considering investing in Pilates home exercise equipment, you've probably already found that Pilates equipment, especially of the larger variety, is quite expensive. But this doesn't mean you have to forgo your dream of the ultimate home gym. There is hope.

The Pilates reformer, chair and tower apparatus listed below are not studio grade or even mid-range Pilates home equipment, but I've heard enough positive reviews of these budget-friendly versions to be able to confidently recommend them. If used correctly, these affordable pieces of Pilates equipment will meet the needs of your at-home workout.

Stamina AeroPilates Reformer

The Stamina AeroPilates Reformer has been on the scene for quite some time now. It seems to be the most popular of the reformers that fall toward the lower end of the price scale. This version includes a free-form cardio rebounder that provides low impact and is gentle on joints, and it also comes with a beginner's DVD workout led by Pilates expert Marjolein Brugman.

Malibu Pilates Chair

The Malibu Pilates Chair is one of the biggest wonders in home exercise equipment history, all thanks to great marketing. If you've heard of the Malibu Pilates Chair, you've probably wondered whether or not it's just a bunch of hype.

I was wondering the same thing myself, so I asked readers for feedback. The comments are mostly positive, though some users mentioned the Malibu Pilates Chair isn't as sturdy as those made by other Pilates equipment manufacturers. You can often find them used on eBay or Amazon, but of course, you take your chances.

Pilatesstick or Tower on the Go

If you don't have the space or budget for a big piece of Pilates equipment, there are still lots of great options, like Peak Pilates' Pilatesstick and the Balanced Body Tower on the Go.

Though these products are made by different companies, they are both intended as portable, space-saving alternatives to traditional Pilates tower systems. Both the Pilatesstick and the Tower on the Go are strapped to a door and have a recommended wall mount feature. See below for reviews of each product.

Unfortunately, the Pilatesstick is no longer produced. It's difficult to track down online, but the Empower Portable Pilates Studio is a nice alternative; it just doesn't affix to the door.

If you still can't stop thinking about the dent these pieces of Pilates equipment will put in your wallet, there's still hope. You don't need to shell out the big bucks on a fancy, high-tech piece of equipment in order to see results.

You can get a perfectly effective workout with nothing more than a Pilates mat and an exercise ring or stability ball for added challenge and variety.
